mixer doesn't work well in Vista ...

Postby stef » September 18th, 2008, 12:29 pm

hi Kambiz,

From my experience with Vista the audiomixer doesn't work very well.
The experiences below are made with the demo \ Mixer Control compiled with D7:

On normal desktop PC's with Vista:
- no systems could not control the mic level.
- control of playback volume worked ok.

On 10 laptop PCs with Vista:
- no system could control the mic level
- 8 out of 10 could not control the playback volume

I read somewhere that there are problems with the mic settings,
depending on what updates you have performed on Vista,
but I can't remember the details.

cheers,
Stef

Seems in Vista each application has its own mixer. Honestly I didn't go thru it.

I was wondering if there was any updates to this issue?

I'm currently using the mixer component to tap into the master volume level for an on-screen type of notification. It works great in XP and 2003, but in Vista and Win7 the program is showing up as its own mixer control; unable to work with the master volume.

Thanks

Sorry, no update yet. I didn't have time to study Vista mixer architecture.

Maybe forget Vista at all,
now Microsoft has confessed it's a totally miss-concept.

The last year I tried to use the mixer on about 60 laptops and 10 PC's,
this are the results:
- On PC's it often works ( 8 out of 10)
- On laptaps it NEVER worked
- Setting the soundcard just from Vista I at least encountered 5 different ways !!

just my 2 cents,
cheers,
Stef

Actually, I found an easy workaround. If the application is set to Windows XP compatibility mode, the mixer controls seem to work perfectly, at least the functions that I'm using. I'm just using a quick OS version check, and if the Windows version is Vista (6.0) or Windows 7 (6.1.. I don't get that either.) then I just write a quick entry into the registry to set it to compatibility mode and force a restart of the app.

It'll do until an actual fix in the mixer code is provided anyway, it's completely transparent to the end user minus that one initial app restart the first time it's run. Not a huge deal.

Thanks :)
